In commemoration of Earth Day, nine schools within the estates in Bishan, Ang Mo Kio and Toa Payoh came forth to participate in the Recycling Outreach Programme organised by National Environment Agency (NEA), National Youth Achievement Award Council (NYAAC) and Bishan grassroots organizations on Saturday, 24th April 2010. The schools are Raffles Institution (Junior College), St Andrew’s Junior College, Raffles Institution, Catholic High School (Secondary), Ang Mo Kio Secondary School, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School, Guangyang Secondary School, First Toa Payoh Primary School and Jing Shan Primary School. The task for these 350 student participants was to collect recyclables in the 37 residential blocks around Bishan Active Park. Altogether, the schools have collected a total of 9818 kg of recyclables. “NEA is targeting to recycle at least 70% of the waste by year 2030. This is to ensure that Singapore’s limited landuse is being fully optimised”, said Guest-of-Honor for this event, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim.
